GUIDE:
GETTING TO NEW YORK CITY
Air Travel
Out-ofTown Bus
Train/Commuter Rail
The consensus among
the local activists is that flying into any of the
three New York Metro airports – Kennedy, LaGuardia
or Newark (NJ) – is OK. Newark airfares may
be cheaper. From each, you can
take a SuperShuttle “minibus” (seating
around ten people) into Manhattan (about $15-$22),
These will drop you off anywhere in Manhattan upon
request. Ask to be taken to 179th Street and Fort
Washington Avenue. For more information / reservations: www.supershuttle.com.
Alternatively, from
Kennedy or LaGuardia ONLY you can take a subway into
town (and up to the church) for $2. (NOTE:
if you have lots of luggage, it may be worth it to
spring for the shuttle bus, as you’ll have to do a
lot of haulin’ if you’re taking the subway.)
Taking the Subway
from LaGuardia or JFK Airports to Holyrood Church
Bus and subway
fares are $2.00 each. Exact fare in coins or MetroCard
is required. Free transfers between subways and buses
are available when using the MetroCard. Plan from between
1 to 1.5 hours to get from the airport to Manhattan,
and another 1/2 hour to get to the church.
From
LaGuardia Airport: Take the M60 (Manhattan
bound) Bus to 125th, Manhattan. Transfer to the
A train Uptown at 125th Street and get off at the “175th Street” exit.
Look for the exit for the George Washington Bridge
Bus Terminal, and you will exit directly into the
terminal. Go up the escalator, turn around, and
go out the glass doors. Make a right turn, and
the church will be directly in front of you across
the street.
From
JFK: Take the
Q10 (Kew Gardens) (Green Bus) from all terminals
to the A Train at Ozone Park-:Lefferts Boulevard.
Take the Manhattan bound A train to the “175th
Street” exit. Look for the exit for the George
Washington Bridge Bus Terminal, and you will exit
directly into the terminal. Go up the escalator,
turn around, and go out the glass doors. Make a right
turn, and the church will be directly in front of
you across the street.
Alternatively, from
JFK, you can take the Air Train from JFK ($5 Enter/Exit
Fare) to Howard Beach and then take the Manhattan
bound A train ($2) to the “175th Street” exit.
Look for the exit for the George Washington Bridge
Bus Terminal, and you will exit directly into the
terminal. Go up the escalator, turn around, and go
out the glass doors. Make a right turn, and the church
will be directly in front of you across the street.
This option may be faster than the bus to subway
option.
NOTE: When taking
the subway BACK to JFK, be sure to take the FAR ROCKAWAY-bound
A train (NOT the “Ozone Park/Lefferts Blvd” one. |
Your Greyhound-type
bus will arrive at Port Authority bus terminal, which
is a huge, busy building between 8th and 9th Avenues
and between 40th and 42nd Streets, with lots of subway
lines running underneath. Go downstairs to the subway
level, get on the A subway line UPTOWN and take it
to the “175th Street” exit. Look for
the exit for the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal,
and you will exit directly into the terminal. Go
up the escalator, turn around, and go out the glass
doors. Make a right turn, and the church will be
directly in front of you across the street.
If you are
taking one of the cheap Chinatown buses, try to get
off at the stops at 40th, 31st, 32nd or 34th St. From
there, walk west to 8th Ave, where you can catch
the 42nd Street A train (entrances for it start as
far south as 40th Street). Get on the A subway
line UPTOWN and take it to the “175th Street” exit.
Look for the exit for the George Washington Bridge
Bus Terminal, and you will exit directly into the
terminal. Go up the escalator, turn around, and go
out the glass doors. Make a right turn, and the church
will be directly in front of you across the street.
If the bus only
stops in Chinatown, just ask for directions to the
nearest subway. In the train station, ask the token
booth clerk how to transfer to the A or just check
the map. |
You will arrive
at either Pennsylvania Station or Grand Central
Station. From Penn Station you get on the A subway
line UPTOWN and take it to the “175th Street” exit.
Look for the exit for the George Washington Bridge
Bus Terminal, and you will exit directly into the
terminal. Go up the escalator, turn around, and
go out the glass doors. Make a right turn, and
the church will be directly in front of you across
the street.
Grand Central
is a little trickier because it is on the east
side of Manhattan: first, you must take the "S" (Shuttle)
train west to the “42nd St./Times Square” stop
(which is easy, because that is the only stop it
makes!); then transfer to the A subway line UPTOWN
and take it to the “175th Street” exit.
Look for the exit for the George Washington Bridge
Bus Terminal, and you will exit directly into the
terminal. Go up the escalator, turn around, and
go out the glass doors. Make a right turn, and
the church will be directly in front of you across
the street. |
